CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Zoe wasn’t done for the night, not by a long stretch. The words that Kidd had given her were still echoing in her mind and, when she had parked her car outside her house, she didn’t head inside. She started towards town.

Her curiosity had got the better of her. She knew that doing whatever Kidd would do was likely to get her in trouble, but she just couldn’t help herself. Her mind was buzzing with thoughts of Dina as she tried to figure out her life. There was so much more going on than they knew, and they were running out of time. The longer Dina remained unfound, the more likely it was that they were going to be looking for a body rather than a person. Zoe didn’t want that to happen.

She made her way through town, which was already a hive of activity, despite it being a Thursday night. Some people just couldn’t hold on until the weekend.

There were girls in short skirts and boys in nice shirts, all of them walking around in a cloud of perfume heading to the various pubs and clubs in Kingston. It wasn’t even the height of student season and already it felt like the whole place was overrun by young people.

The Snake Pit was at the other end of town, near the riverside. It was hard to believe that Zoe walked past this most mornings and hadn’t even noticed it tucked away above the row of restaurants along the riverfront. How could she have missed it?

Maybe they did a good job of keeping themselves to themselves, she thought. The only reason she knew about most of the clubs and pubs in Kingston was because she’d had to deal with people acting disorderly in them when she was in uniform. That wasn’t the case anymore.

There wasn’t much of a queue outside. She checked her watch. It was barely nine o’clock. The club was open, but it wouldn’t get really busy until closer to eleven. People would be in the pubs or at home pre-drinking before they hit the club.

She waited, got patted down by the security guard, and made her way inside. It was down a couple of flights of stairs, taking her to a large, open space where bright, coloured lights flickered and pulsed in time with the music. It was so loud she could feel the music vibrating through the floor, up through her feet, coursing through her entire body.

Zoe couldn’t remember the last time she had set foot in a club, and just by doing so, she was reminded why. The floors were sticky, the music was deafening, and it absolutely stank of sweat and alcohol. The night hadn’t even started yet. It was only going to get worse.

There weren’t many people here yet. The DJ was bopping in the booth, half-heartedly pumping his hand in the air as he switched between tracks. Maybe he was conserving his energy for later when the party really got started.

There were a several bars in the space.
